Create Space Core Values Exercise

A reflection on what’s important to you - outside of the roles you play.

This exercise is adapted from Brené Brown's work on values from Dare to Lead. Identifying your core values helps you understand what drives your decisions, your actions, and your sense of fulfillment.

When you know your values, you can live a life that aligns with who you truly are — your essence. Not your job title. Not your roles. Not what others expect. You.

As part of your Create Space program, this exercise invites you to pause and reflect on what matters most.

Come to our session having done the work below. We'll do the rest together.

Your prep work:

  1. Optional - Listen to one or both of Brené Brown podcast episodes linked below. They'll ground you in what values really are — and what it means to actually live them.

2. Download the values list: Brené and her team created a list of 100 values. Note: there are two pages in the document.

3. Narrow the list of values down to your TWO core values. This is the hardest part, but Brené says “if you have more than two values, do you have any values?” It may help to organize your values into themed groups. Which values may be a result of or contribution to others? Which feel like non-negotiables, and which feel like nice-to-haves?

4. Reflect on two questions: How do these values already show up in your life? And where might you make more space for them?

Come to our session ready to share your two core values and whatever came up for you in the process. There's no pressure to have it perfectly figured out — that's what the session is for.

Note: Values may shift over time — and that is perfectly normal! No one is going to hold exactly the same set of values for their entire lives.
